Crime Solvers Seeks Suspects in Airbag Thefts

Fairfax County Crime Solvers is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the persons responsible for a number of airbag thefts. Throughout the county this year, more than 50 airbag thefts have been reported to police.

Most recently, seven vehicles parked in the Fairfax area of the Fair Oaks police district were hit during the overnight hours of Friday, April 4 into Saturday, April 5. Nine vehicles parked in the Annandale area of the Mason police district were hit during the overnight hours of Wednesday, April 9 into Thursday, April 10.

Some of these cars have been unlocked but the majority of these thefts occur by smashing out the rear window of a locked vehicle. The suspects open the hood, disconnect the battery then remove the air bag.

Residents are reminded to secure their vehicles and not leave keys or valuable items inside. Street lights, porch lights and lamp post lighting around your home are an added security as well in preventing criminal activity. Additionally, you are asked to call police when you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood. Oftentimes these types of cases are solved by area residents recognizing unusual activity in their own neighborhoods and alerting police at the time it is occurring.
